Rose Island is a Class Act! Students learn how the past can provide answers for the future at the Rose Island Lighthouse a historic, living museum and environmental education center. You can either visit the Lighthouse, or have the Lighthouse brought to your school. See how the past en-LIGHT-ens the future! The Rose Island Lighthouse is uniquely situated to serve as an independent, energy efficient, environmental education center. Without city services or utilities, the lighthouse is directly dependent on forces of nature like wind power and rainwater. The conscientious, resourceful way of life practiced on this island by generations of keepers can be an inspiration to us moderns. Every year children from grades K-6 come to Rose Island to learn about and participate in this traditional way of life. Rose Island Lighthouse's student activities emphasize an environmental awareness consistent with the tradition of lightkeeping, as well as focusing on the restoration of the building, the history of American lighthouses, and the very special Rose Island environment. To teachers and youth group leaders wishing to integrate this unique experience into their curriculum:
