Guidelines for Full Time Keepers (to qualify for a deductible contribution)

Weekly Keepers can qualify for a tax deduction if you:

  1. Sign up in advance to do extra projects for the lighthouse (carpentry, plumbing, painting, etc.)
  2. Spend at least 6-8 hrs per day for at least 5 of the 7 days you're at the lighthouse
  3. Keep a daily written log of your projects and the time you spent doing chores for the lighthouse (other than doing your own personal housekeeping, like washing your dishes, etc.)
  4. Take before and after pictures of your work
  5. Your report needs to include a cover sheet with
     -- your name
     -- address
-- dates of your keeper duty
AND your proof that you worked for the lighthouse
     -- your time log
     -- before and after photos
  6. Create two copies of your report
  7. Send one to us (you keep the other one with your tax return).

When we receive your report, we will:

  1. Verify the information you provided against our records
  2. Issue a Good Light-House Keeping Seal of Approval
  3. Send you a letter that
-- Verifies the projects you worked on
-- Recognizes the time you spent in service to the lighthouse
-- Acknowledges the full amount you paid to RILF (for accommodations, sales tax, parking and transportation) as a tax-deductible donation.
-- Advises you to contact your tax advisor about the deductibility of your other out of pocket expenses for travel, food, phone, etc. in connection with your lighthouse keeper visit.  KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS!
